How I Made My Study Abroad Successful

Howdy!

I just wanted to write a little bit (in English) about some things that I did to make my study abroad successful, give some advice, what I wish I'd done differently, and just comment on the program (a Spanish Immersion Study Abroad).

• BRING YOUR OWN SUNSCREEN.I moved this one to the top of the list because it's so important. You would not believe how expensive sunscreen is in Costa Rica. For a medium sized bottle, it is about $20. And that's the cheapest that I found. You will go through that bottle in one weekend at the beach. The sun light here is more direct than the US, so the sun is a lot stronger. It doesn't feel hotter, but it feels stronger. It's difficult to explain the feeling of the sun because it is strange, but trust me, you'll want to bring sunscreen. I thought that I could just buy it here. I thought that because it was a tropical area, everyone needed it so it would be cheap. FALSO. Everyone here is tan and knows how to avoid the sun at all costs. Probably because it's more expensive to buy sunscreen than it is to just stay inside from 10am-3pm when the sun is the hottest and strongest. I sun burn very easily and therefore have to wear sunscreen on my face every day because just the walk to school (10 minutes) in the middle of the day burns me. So. If you are like me, make sure you bring enough face sunscreen as well because you may have to use it daily. I also suggest a sun hat. I didn't bring one because I'm not a hat person, but man do I wish I had one when we're at the beach and I see my roommate with her hat. 
• Ignore catcalls. If you're a woman, they are going to yell at you. Don't look at them. If you do, they literally will follow you. That isn't a joke. Just keep looking straight ahead and ignore them. They usually just say things like "Hey beautiful" or "Hey gringa" or they whistle at you or honk their horns in their cars and yell. Sometimes, they say nasty things, IGNORE IT. Don't get angry and think you're going to tell them off. TERRIBLE IDEA. Just ignore it. And if it happens when you're passing someone on the street, walk on the side of the sidewalk that is closest to the road so that they cannot push you into a wall and rob you or kidnap you. This also makes it so they can't get too close to you. Sometimes, they will try to get close to you or like with me, they love how white my skin is and they will try to touch my arm. Just be confident and aware and be smart.
• Do not go into a study abroad with the pressure to come out fluent. I had this idea in my head that I would go on a study abroad trip for a semester and come back speaking like a native speaker. This did not happen for me. And that's okay. My Spanish is TEN times better. I can understand people, speak, and think much more quickly and correctly in Spanish than I could before coming here. Many of the other students put so much pressure on themselves to be PERFECT at Spanish, that they stress themselves out too much and can't retain anything. What helped me the most was to just relax and let it come to me. I really only was able to do this after I decided to follow the Costa Rican idea of Pura Vida because normally I stress out over things like that too. But when you let yourself just relax and focus on understanding something as a whole instead of translating each individual word (and realizing how many words you don't know), you train your brain to accept Spanish. Eventually, you will be hearing things and understanding them without thinking about translating them into English in your head. 
• Do not Skype your friends/family every day. You learn so much more when you are IN the culture, when you are forced to speak it every day because your host mom doesn't know English, and when you are constantly seeing signs and hearing things in Spanish. When you are skyping, facebooking, emailing, etc, in ENGLISH, it is harder for your brain to absorb Spanish. I know you miss your family and friends, but you have to remember why you're here. You're not here to sit around and cry about how you miss home or you miss your family. You came here because you want to learn to speak Spanish. Sure, you're going to have a few times when you break down and cry because you miss home. Talk to your family, but don't do it every day. Let yourself be submerged in the language. You have probably heard the saying "If you don't use it, you lose it." Don't let that happen to you while you are in another country studying a language. Many people on my trip skyped every day with friends/family and were on facebook all afternoon and then would complain about their Spanish not improving. Of course it won't if you aren't letting yourself be submerged in the language. What helped me with not talking to my family every day and submerging myself was to eat nutella
• Watch movies in Spanish. They dub the cartoon movies with Spanish voice overs, go watch kids movies. They're easy to understand. Also, if you have Netflix, you can put movies in Spanish. It helped me to also put Spanish subtitles. Sometimes the subtitles are a little off from the audio, but it means the same thing so if you don't understand the audio, you can usually understand the subtitles or vice versa.
• When you don't know a word, try to explain it in Spanish to someone. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to use a word that I did not know in Spanish. If you try to explain the word with words you DO know to your host mom or whoever you are talking to, you are using more Spanish vocabulary and that is much better for your brain to think that way in Spanish than for you to just look it up in a dictionary and say it. You won't learn it that way. I actually did not even bring a dictionary here. I used google translate for homework, but I really didn't need it very often.
• Utilize your host family as a resource. Do not sit in your room all the time. Talk with your host family. They are host families for a reason-they want to help you. My host family was an older woman. She loves the companionship of having students. Most others are like this as well and as you will notice, they speak MUCH more slowly for you than people on the street will because they care that you understand. When they invite you places, go. When they eat dinner with you, ask about their day or the news. They are there to help you.
• Try to talk to locals. This is easier said than done. And I understand that. Everyone will tell you to just talk to locals, but it is TERRIFYING. The first time that you speak Spanish to someone and they have to tell you they don't understand you, you will want to break down and cry. Don't. Use it as motivation to work on your accent and pronunciation. I was in a class with locals because my Spanish level was high enough from the states, so I had more opportunities than other students in my program who were in the beginner and intermediate Spanish classes with the program. SO. How do you do it if you have no classes with locals? Talk to your taxi drivers. They love it because most people ignore them. They will almost always compliment your Spanish also. Probably to be polite, but it is nice to hear. Also, don't be afraid to talk to your shop keepers either.
• Ask for directions and recommendations. People are extremely helpful in Costa Rica at least. A big part of that I think is their lack of directions. Well, they just give directions differently. I felt a lot of the time that I was living in 1975 because people still use maps. People can even draw you maps! I always use my gps back home so it was just really different. People love to help you though. Be cautious, of course. But I found some amazing restaurants just by asking "Sabe sobre un restaurante que tenga buena comida?"
• When locals speak to you in English, respond in Spanish. A problem that I ran into when I would travel on weekends, or in the city even, was that in touristy towns, everyone speaks English. Which sucks if you're trying to practice your Spanish. Even locals will speak to you in English. Ask them to speak to you in Spanish. Sometimes they do this weird thing where they'll start talking in Spanish then you respond in Spanish then they respond in English. The fact is that they want to practice their English. Great, but not for you. Try your best to make them speak Spanish or if not, keep responding in Spanish and let them respond in English.
• Talk, talk, talk. The most important part of knowing a language is being able to speak it. In the US, they teach us more how to read and write. That's great, but that doesn't help me to communicate and apply the language with other people who speak it. That's why I came here, to speak better. If you don't try, you won't improve. It's as simple as that. Don't rely on another American's Spanish or that you'll find someone who speaks English. Speak for yourself. Again, easier said than done. But you have to learn to just let go of your fears and try or you won't speak any better when you leave than when you came.
• Learn to laugh at yourself. This is SO important. I cannot tell you how many times I mixed up a word and said something that a Tico thought was funny and they started laughing at me. Usually, I would realize it right after and laugh with them. If you don't laugh it off, you'll stress yourself out and lose your confidence. You're in a foreign country and people already expect that you're just a tourist who only knows how to say Hola and Gracias. Don't be afraid to show off that you do know something, but at the same time don't be afraid to be wrong! I can't tell you how many times I mixed up the word for "blocks" and "notebooks" when asking for directions and said "So it's six notebooks east?" The Spanish words are very similar. It's going to happen to you, so just laugh it off. The locals aren't laughing at you because they're making fun of you, they're laughing because it was funny. If you said that in English to your friends, you'd all laugh too. Don't take it personally.
• Remember you stand out and be safe. Not only am I a "gringa" which means a while woman, I a also a "macha" which means blonde. Not to mention that I am 6 feet tall. I stand out like a stain on a wedding dress. And that's okay. But if you stand out as much as me or even just as a gringo, you have to take your safety seriously. I don't just mean with catcalls. At night, it is extremely dangerous to be out on the street. Don't be an idiot and think "oh my house is 10 minutes away, I'll be fine" or "Well I'm in a group of six" OR ESPECIALLY "Well I'm walking with a guy so it's okay." FALSO. The people who got robbed in my program, were guys. It doesn't matter because you're all gringos. I lived ten minutes from the mall where taxis were. I always took a taxi at night. ALWAYS. One time, a taxi driver laughed at my roommate and I for taking a taxi such a short distance, but you have to ignore that because it is just a stupid idea to walk at night no matter where you are because you look like an easy target just because you look like a tourist. I look like MORE of a target because I'm white, a woman, and blonde. Be smart.
• Don't go out with Ticos alone. This is focused more towards women travelling in CR. Like I said I'm a blonde and there aren't blonde Ticos. They are few and far between. SO. Guys like blonde girls. They like American girls period. Don't go alone with a Tico. Bring a friend. It isn't rude to do that either because I met up with some Ticos before and they brought friends without telling me, so it's acceptable to just show up with a friend. You're probably doing it to practice your Spanish anyway so I'm sure someone else in your program wants to go to practice too.
• Explore Costa Rica. There are so many places to see in Costa Rica. You can't rely on a study abroad program to take you to EVERYTHING. You have a lot of free weekends. Save your money to go out of town with friends on the program. My favorite trip was one that I took on my own with friends. 
• Budget your money wisely. I suggest knowing exactly how much you have to spend each week and sticking to that. Don't go broke. For me, all of my funds for this trip came from scholarships so I had a limited amount of money. It ended up being a little over $100 a week of spending money. I cut that down to $100 just in case I went over one week. I tried my best to stick to over all, $100 a week. I used an excel spreadsheet to keep track of my money. Every time that I spent money, I would add it to my excel sheet that subtracted it from my weekly amount and total amount. It is difficult to keep track when you are using cash, BE AWARE OF THIS and keep receipts or write things down, whatever you need to do to remember how much you spent. *watch out for fees from your bank on credit cards*
• Bring good walking shoes. People interpret this as tennis shoes. No. You will hate wearing tennis shoes all the time. I suggest chacos, vans, keds or something similar. You will want a closed toed shoe. I left my vans last minute thinking I wouldn't need them and I regret it everyday. I have chacos which are great, but like I said, you'll want comfy walking shoes that are not tennis shoes.
• Bring jeans. People tend to think, oh I'm going to Costa Rica, it'll be hot, I should wear shorts, a tank top, and flip flops everyday. FALSO. First of all, if you're a girl, you would get SO many catcalls it would be insane. You just don't wear shorts here. Some girls do, but it's not common, therefore, you can see why you'd get yelled at. It also is not THAT hot all the time. At night, it gets cold actually. I was glad I brought sweatpants to sleep in. I also suggest bringing cardigans or light jackets for if you're out at night because it does get cold.
• If you have a blog, blog in Spanish. This is what I did and it was SO helpful. You probably can write very well in Spanish, better than you can speak it. But as you type every day in Spanish about your day, you will be amazed at how much your vocabulary has increased and how you don't have as much difficulty determining which tense to you (preterite vs imperfect, subjuntive vs indicative, etc). Blogger has a google translate gadget for your blog that makes it easy for your friends and family to still know what you're saying. 
• Take lots of pictures. For a lot of people, this might be the only time that they get to come to whatever country you get to go to and you need to take advantage of that. Take pictures when you go places so that you will remember the places you've been and the stories that come with them later.
• Don't bring any books in English. If you are serious about learning a foreign language, don't bring books in English with you. Not even for the plane ride. I have a kindle so I brought that and have found some free books in Spanish to read. If not, you should buy magazines in the country. They have all kinds and a lot of them are the same in the US but in Spanish which makes it easier for you to understand. The pictures help also.

These are some of the advice that my Mama Tica has given me during my time in Costa Rica. Some of it is kind of funny, but all of it is useful.

1: Siempre cocina con amor.

Always cook with love.

2: Agregue la semilla del aguacate a su guacamole para no se poner feo.

Spend time in the Bible when you are afraid.

6: Ponga aluminio debajo su estufa para quitar los quemados fácilmente.

Put aluminum foil below your stove burners to get rid of the burned stuff easily.

7: No tenga frustración con español, poco a poco va a aprender todo.

Don't be frustrated with Spanish, little by little you are going to understand everything.

8: No te preocupes porque Dios sabe todo.

Don't worry because God knows everything.

9: No traiga mucha plata cuando sale la casa.
Don't carry a lot of cash when you leave the house.

10. Siempre ponga el amor de Dios primer, su madre despues, y despues su novio. El amor de una mama es como el amor de Dios, siempre esta contigo.

Mi Ultimos Dias

Ayer fue muy ultimo dia en costa rica. Estuve muy lista para regresar hasta la fiesta con mis SOLmates.

fuimos a una finca que tenia una piscina y las mamas vinieron con nosotros y nos hicieron desayuno y almuerzo. Nadamos mucho del dia. Despues del almuerzo, las mamas nos dijeron como se sentian a quedarnos en sus casas. Y les tocaron a nosotros a decir algo sobre nuestras mamas tambien. Todos lloraron. Fue tan lindo.

No despedí a mi mama porque es solamente hasta luego porque ahora tengo familia alla. Me gustó mucho a conocerles a las amigas de mi mama. Ellas me dispidieron en miercoles y ayer una amiga que tambien es una vecina vino para visitarme. Ella me hizo comida porque no quiso que mi mama necesitara cocinar despues del paseo a la finca. Muy linda es ella.

No lloré esta mañana cuando me fui y le dije hasta luego a mi mama. Pero lloré en el aeropuerto cuando el hombre no requirió que yo pague por mi maleta extra ni por mi otra maleta que era tan pesada. Yo le hablé en español y pienso que el pudo ver que estaba lista a regresar de un viaje largo porque yo sé mucho español. Gracias a Dios que él me ayudó. Siempre recordaré que pasó.

Ahora estoy en el avion escribiendo para agregar a mi blog cuando regreso. Me siento emocionada para regesar. Cualquier lugar estoy es mi hogar. Mi hogar fue Costa Rica por cuatro meses y pronto irá Texas. No puedo estar triste que necesito salir porque este viaje fue una experiencia increible. No quiero sentirme triste porque voy a recordar este viaje con cariño por todo mi vida.

Tengo mucho que aprendí para traer a mi casa conmigo. No solamente español pero también, el concepto de pura vida, una familia tica, amigas ticas, memorias buenisimas y una nueva vista de la vida.

Gracias al Señor, gracias a mi mama tica y gracias a Costa Rica, nos vemos en el futuro, yo sé.

Mi Ultimo Miercoles

Hoy fue mi última miércoles. Que triste. Mama me hizo burritos, mis favoritos, para el almuerzo.

Fui al cine con amigos por la última vez. Vimos Oblivion. Fue bastante bien. No sé que películas están en el cine en los estados unidos ahorita. Estoy emocionada para ver películas. Me encantan y no tenía mucho ganas de ir aquí porque necesito tomar taxis y todo y en los estados unidos puedo manejar al cine.

Mañana entrego mi teléfono a mi directora. Y tengo mi último examen! Después de esto mañana, estoy libreeee!

Pero probablemente no empiezo a arreglar mis cosas hasta viernes en la noche porque siempre arreglo mis cosas para viajar en los últimos minutos.

Hay una otra chica en mi vuelo de regresar. Estoy feliz porque podemos encontrar dónde pagamos el impuesto de salido y nuestra puerta y todo juntos.

Hoy fue bastante bien. Tres días más!

Vimos una película hoy en la clase se llama Como Agua Para Chocolate. Fue bien pero un poco extraño. Es de México y hay una cultura de mágica allá entonces había cosas que no entendí bien. Pero, más o menos una buena película.

No piensa que no me gusta Costa Rica. Me ENCANTA Costa Rica. Hay muchas cosas que hacen aquí que espero que hagamos en los estados unidos.

Y mi mamá aquí es la mejor de todos las madres. No estoy bromeando, hay algunas que no pueden tener más estudiantes ahora. Todo fue bien con mi mamá y la comida siempre fue perfecta. Pero estoy lista para regresar. 

Hablando de comida... Me encanta la comida aquí mucho, pero, es como si comiera comida italiana cada día cada día. Si hay comidas diferentes, pero cada día sería espaguetis. Es como así aquí, siempre hay arroz y frijoles con alguna comida.  Me gustan. Pero no cada día. Me gusta variedad en mi comida.

YO EXTRAñO SALSAAA!

Hoy fue bien. Mi maestra está con dolor de su espalda y no puede ir a la clase por nuestra última semana. Tenemos una substituta. Ella es muy amable. Me gusta también porque es un otro persona para entender diferentes acentos.

Peor A La Playa

Mi fin de semana a la playa no pasó como quería. 

Viernes fue bastante bien. Excepto que llovió todo el día! No había mucho sol. Había luz en el cielo entonces no pudimos quedarnos en la playa ni la piscina porque es peligroso.

En la noche, se me olvidé para ver al almohada. Soy alérgica a muchos tipos de almohadas. Traje una pequeña conmigo pero dormí en esta almohada encima de la otra. Fue un idea terrible. Me desperté en la noche con mis ojos en fuego y no hasta como las cinco de la mañana pude descubrir por qué.. 

También tenía dolor de la cabeza en la noche pero usualmente después de dormir, estoy bien. Pero no dormí! Entonces, mi cabeza fue peor y se convirtió en mi primera migrania. 

No quise ir a la playa por el sol y no quise oír nada ni hacer nada. También una compañera conmigo estaba vomitando porque ella estaba enferma. Ella no quiso perder su $10 por la noche en el hotel pero a mí, no quise quedarme en la playa ni el hotel con el calor. Me fui a casa. 

Dormí mucho del día cuando regresé. Espero que mañana es mejor.

Hoy tuve mi examen, pienso que fue bien! Vamos a ver.

Mañana voy por la playa otra vez! Es nuestro último fin de semana en Costa Rica y queremos ir a la playa una vez más.

No sé como me siento sobre mi regreso a los estados unidos. A veces me siento lista para ir ahorita. Otras veces, me siento como quiero quedarme aquí por más tiempo.

En cada lugar, hay cosas buenas y malas que pasan. En Costa Rica, nos dijo mucho para tener cuidado de ladrones que quieren robarle. Y siempre tengo mucho cuidado. Pero hay una chica en mi programa que estuvo robado esta semana. 

No estoy feliz que eso pasó pero había cosas ella hizo que no ayudó la situación. En la noche, nunca camina sola. No porque ud es una mujer, pero también porque es un gringo. Y TAMBIEN porque robos son muy comunes y fácil cuando hay alguien solo. 

Cuando está caminando no hable en inglés. Si ud no se parece a mi, una macha, es más probable que nadie va a molestarle pero si es muy obvio que ud no es un Tico, necesita cuidarse. 

Y qué es MUY importante también es que no parece perdido. Si alguien piensa que ud no sabe dónde está, va a robarle.

Esos son muy natural a mi, pero para la mayoría de la gente, no es. En los estados unidos, es lo mismo. Si estoy sola en la noche, no voy a atracar atención a mi. Especialmente en algunos lugares.

SI! Voy a graduarme temprano con mis dos carreras. Gracias a Dios. No quise mucho a graduarme temprano pero es mi única opción. Necesito tomar mi GRE este verano y solicitar a universidades de secundaria. Mi vida está empezando muy rápido. No sé dónde voy después de Mayo ahora. Vamos a ver. Dios sabe. Pero, quiero que El me diga.

No hay más noticias, solamente he sido estudiando. Ew.

Hoy fue llena de estrés.

El libro que leemos en mi clase es muy difícil para entender. Necesito leer solamente diez páginas pero es igual como dos horas para leer. Qué frustrado para tomar dos horas para leer diez páginas!

También tengo un examen este jueves en mi clase de historia de costa rica y no entiendo mucho porque no hablamos sobre mucho! Solamente presentaciones de los estudiantes y mi profe no nos dijo que es importante de las presentaciones. Entonces, no sé que estoy haciendo. 

Estoy tratando a estudiar pero no sé si estudio la información correcta para el examen. Y es el final, solamente hay dos exámenes. Que susto. 

También, hoy hubiera tenido una cita por Skype con mi clase de niños en nueva york pero se me olvidé que la hora es diferente allí de aquí...entonces, estaba durmiendo cuando tenía mi cita. 

La úncia cosa que fue bueno fue que lluvió durante mi siesta y por eso, fue MUY bien. Me encanta Costa Rica pero estoy lista para regresar. Le extraño a mi familia, a mi novio, a mi perro que ya no conocí, a mi compañera, a mis amigos, a mi CARRO, a todo!

Me parece que todo los extranos de casa (homesickness) que no me sentí después de ahora, son me pegan al mismo tiempo. Necesito relajar porque en once dias voy a regresar. Gracias a Dios.

Cosas Que Damos Por Sentado: Dinero

Hoy fue aburrido, solamente hice tarea y leí y extrañé a Tejas. Estoy lista para regresar. MUY lista.

Pero voy a hablar sobre dinero aquí. Cuando estoy en los estados unidos, yo uso mi tarjeta para todo. Porque para mí, es más fácil para no gastar mucho dinero. Por mucha de la gente, es el opuesto. 

Por eso, en Costa Rica, no puedo usar mi tarjeta porque hay muchos cargas por usar a fueras de los estados unidos. Entonces, necesito usar dinero en efectivo. 

Cuando tengo dinero en efectivo, necesito solamente tener un poco de dinero conmigo o voy a gastarlo en total. Esto es bueno porque mi mama tica siempre me dice, “no traiga mucha plata cuando sale la casa, es peligroso.“ 

En Costa Rica, es muy común que personas se roban. Es un gran problema aquí especialmente para turistas. Había una estudiante del semestre pasado que su teléfono estaba robado de su pantalones. 

Entonces, si tuviera mucho dinero en sus pantalones y parece a un turista, alguien probablemente te robará. Es porque es muy peligroso para nosotros a tener mucho dinero con nosotros.

Pero, a ud, ¿qué es mucha plata? Esto es interesante porque aquí, 5.000 colones es “mucha plata“ y es solamente diez dolares. Me siento incomoda para tener diez mil colones conmigo pero menos, no me importa pero depende en la situación.

Por ejemplo, si va a pagar un chófer de taxi como un mil, (se llama “un rojo“ porque el billete es rojo) y le da un billete de diez mil, es probable que él va a darle su menudo incorrecto y quedar el resto. No es inteligente para pagar una cuenta pequeña con un billete grande. 

Es como en los estados unidos, cuando alguien me pagó en un 50 o 100, necesité contar su menudo. Pero aquí, es peor si eres un turista porque personas saben que es probable que ud no sabe español.

Hoy fue una aventura! Fui a la playa con mi amiga.

Quise ir a la playa Esterillos porque una amiga que he conocido por muchos años tiene un hermano que vive allí. él enseña lecciones de surfear pero quise alquilar una tabla para compartir con mi amiga.

Para ir allí, necesitamos tomar un bus a la Playa Jaco y después vamos po Esterillos. En internet, me dijo que es fácil y borato para tomar un taxi. MENTIROSO. Fue MUY caro cuando yo le pregunté a un chofer de taxi. 

Pero estuvo bien porque conocimos Jaco y nos gustaba cuando fuimos por la primera vez. Entonces, nos quedamos en la playa Jaco. 

Jaco es muy lindo pero el agua es MUY fuerte. Entonces, no nos sentimos seguras para surfear en el agua allí. No somos profesionales ya! Pero un día en la playa es que necesité. Estoy muy emocionada para regresar a los estados unidos pero al mismo tiempo, tengo miedo porque tendré que tomar mi GRE este verano y probablemente graduarme temprano. 

Entonces, mi vida va a empezar muy pronto en como un año y me da susto  porque ahorita, estoy en vacaciones, no es como la universidad normal. Necesitaré acostumbrarme a mi propio país, que extraño.  Pero Dios sabe. Quiero saber dónde yo pertenezco después de la universidad!

Hoy fue un poco aburrido. Fui a correr y leí mi libro. No mucho.

Pero, en la noche, fui a San Jose para reunirme con una amiga para cenar en el lugar que tiene una gran promoción. Es un MONTAñA de nachos con quince palitos (hot wings) y dos bebidas. Perfecto.

Tenía una conversación con un chofer de taxi sobre comida por mucho tiempo. él me preguntó sobre qué comidas he probado en costa rica y sus comidas favoritas. Muy comico como personas aquí se hacen muy emocionada sobre comida.

Mañana voy por la playa con mi amiga para surfear pero solamente para el día. Quise ir a Montezuma este fin de semana pero porque no sabía que necesité pagar por todos de mis comidas en Nicaragua, no tengo el dinero para ir. Pero está bien porque Montezuma es una playa y puedo ir a una playa más cera a mí.

Hoy fue un día de descansar. No hice mucho excepto estudié y leí mi libro para mi clase.

Para mi clase de literatura, solamente hay cuatro estudiantes. Vamos a leer un libro se llama única Mirando Al Mar. La mujer que trabaja en la biblioteca me dijo que es muy bueno. Es sobre la vida real de los pobres que son mucho de américa central.

Es muy difícil para aprender porque hay muchas metáforas y no sé muchas palabras. Cada otra palabra, necesito buscarla en mi diccionario pero está bien, voy a aprender MUCHO vocabulario.

Tengo mucho miedo porque tengo un examen en mi clase de historia en una semana. Es el final y no me siento que aprendimos mucho en el segundo parte de la clase entonces tengo miedo. Voy a estudiar mucho. Quiero una A!

Hoy, terminé la bufanda que mi mama tica me enseñó como hacer.  Se me olividé sobre esa porque la puse en mi cajón pero la encontré y quise terminarla.

Mañana, voy a San Jose por los nachos grandes otra vez! Los nachos que son más como un MONTAñA de nachos.

Hoy fue un poco aburrido. Tenía mucho sueño! No entiendo pero cada persona tiene mucho sueño. Mi mamá Tica dice es un viri de sueño.

Esta mañana, vi las noticas con mi mamá. La periodista estaba muyyy embarazada. Y puede verla. Ella no estaba escondido. Mi mamá me dijo que ella tiene dos semanas más ante se va para dar la luz y su tiempo de la madre. 

También me dijo que mujeres reciben TRES O CUATRO MESES después de dar la luz y UN MES antes. Que diferente! Le pregunté por qué y ella me dijo es porque la mujer necesita cuidarlo a su bebe y es un derecho para regresar a su trabajo. 

La cosa que no puedo entender es como en los estados unidos, solamente reciben seis semanas pagadas después de dar la luz. Seis!  Pero en Costa Rica, es un derecho de la mujer para trabajar Y tener hijos. 

En esta cultura, la mujer usualmente se queda en la casa. Pero tiempos están cambiando y mujeres tienen trabajos pero la gente tiene respeto por la primera trabajo de la mujer-sus hijos. 

En los estados unidos, tenemos la idea que cada cosa necesita ser muy rápida y instantáneamente. Por eso, pienso que americanos quieren que las mujeres devuelven muy pronto a trabajar. En otros países también, las mujeres reciben más tiempo. En Czech Republic y Slovakia es normal para tener tres o cuatro ANOS. 

Y los estados unidos dice que solamente necesita seis meses. Es uno de los más bajos del mundo se refiere al tiempo de la madre. 

Es muy diferente y a mí, mejor porque cuando yo tengo hijos, no quiero que mi bebe de seis semanas está en un daycare. Que loco.

Ahhh dónde empiezo? Fuimos a Nicaragua en la mañana, muy temprano en viernes. No regresamos hasta la noche pasada a las nueve de la noche.

Salimos por Nicaragua a las seis de la mañana pero estuvimos listos a las cuatro para ir a la estación de los buses. Fue un viaje de ocho horas! A mí, no me importa porque pude dormir en el bus mucho del tiempo.

Cuando llegamos allí, encontramos comidas. La cosa más triste de mi vida fue los niños pobres en Nicaragua. Hay mucho niños que piden por dinero o comida y también venden cosas para obtener dinero/comida. Es MUY triste. Pero, es un poco difícil.

Me parece un buen idea para darles comida. pero en realidad, es muy mal para les dar comida. ¿Por qué? Porque el gobierno tiene un lugar se llama Carita Feliz (Little Happy Face, how cute right?) y es un lugar para dar la comida a los niños y la comida es nutriativo y saludable. Cuando los turistas les dan “comida rica“ ellos no quieren ir a la Carita Feliz. Por eso, hay mucho malnutrición en los niños.

Los niños parecen muy delgados también pero es mejor para les dar comida como protein bars o algo como así que tiene nutrientes que necesitan.

Muchos de los niños me vinieron porque estoy muy “chechla“ que es como gringo (white man) pero es de Nicaragua. Pienso que es comico porque es como “leche“ que significa milk, que es blanco como los gringos. Entonces, se dicen “chechle“ porque las personas gringas se parecen a leche. 

Así, los niños piensan que tengo mucho dinero porque estoy muy gringa. Muchos niños me dieron flores hechos de hojas del arból de banano como un regalo. Les dije que no la quiero pero insistieron. Cuando la acepté, se transformaron a pedir “porfa algo para mi? algo para comer? algun moneda?“ y a veces me dan una cara triste o hacen sonidos para me da simpatía. Se rompió mi corazón.

Hicimos cosas muy divertidas también, no solamente tristeza! Fuimos a un volcán y subimos arriba para ver una vista inimaginable. Hubieramos ido al tour de las cavernas pero el volcán está activo y empezó a tirar piedras calientes entonces....nos fuimos pronto. Caminamos en Granada, la cuidad más antiguo de Nicaragua y pienso que centralamérica pero no estoy segura. 

También fuimos a cuatro pueblos indigenos. En un lugar, se hacen ceramicas, muchisima y son muy lindisimas. Pude tratar a hacer una ceramica! Muy divertido, hice un pot de que estaba muy orgullosa! Necesita ocho horas para hacer en el fuego, entonces no pude tener mi pot pero tengo fotos! 

Una noche, fuimos con algunos amigos para ver una película. Estaba TAN lindo porque el teatro fue como un teatro de los 1930s. Muy viejo con muchas sillas. Había dos aves en el teatro! Qué comico cuando los encontramos que estaban acá!

Un fin de semana muy lindo!

Hoy fue un poco triste. Mi compañera se va en la mañana por los estados unidos. 

Entonces, a la escuela, todos los estudiantes firmaron una carta para ella para decir a te quiero y te extrañaré. También para intercambiar numeros de teléfono porque aquí no podemos usar nuestros propios telefonos de los estados unidos. Entonces no sabemos el número que funciona en los estados unidos de nadie! Y ella se les despidió a todos los estudiantes. 

También fue el último día del tercer curso y en el último curso, solamente hay cuatro estudiantes en mi clase. Los otros cinco se van de la clase porque no necesitan el credito por la clase de Literatura. Entonces, teníamos una fiesta con comida y queque y todo. Comí mucho...en mi defenso, había queso (queso like you think of: the warm dip) y salsa y frijoles y guacamole!!

Después fui a mi clase con Ticos....y por supuesto, el momento que salí a la casa, acabó por llover! MUCHISIMO! Tenía mi jaqueta de lluvia pero no estaba bastante... estaba muy mojada! Pero cada persona en mi clase estaba también.

En la mañana vamos por Nicaragua! No sé si puedo escribir mi blog porque solamente voy a traer mi Kindle, no mi computadora y es difícil para usar este sitio en mi Kindle. Vamos a ver!

Hoy fue un poco aburrido porque estaba un poco enferma. Mi garganta me duele, espero que todo esté bien en viernes porque vamos por Nicaragua!

Esta noche, mi compañera cocinó apple cobbler. MMM. delicioso. Ella se va en viernes por los estados unidos temprano por su trabajo. Es triste pero es bueno para mi español porque ella siempre me habla en inglés en la casa, nunca en español. Y ahora, no hay nadie en la casa para hablar en inglés conmigo.

También mi mama tica nos hizo “agua dulce.“ Es una bebida tipica de costa rica. Es agua, dulce, y miel, todo calentado. Cuando digo dulce, es difícil para explicar. Es como un block de azucar que es sticky y duro. Se usa para hacer miel, agregue con canela y agua en un recipiente para calentar. Con agua dulce, es como miel (que se hace con dulce tambien) y MáS dulce. Mucho azucar pero MUY sabroso. 

Tengo una lista de comida que quiero cocinar por diferentes miembros de mi familia. Y agua dulce es en esta lista!

Hoy fue bastante bien. No hice mucho que no es normal. Fui a clase y vimos una película se llama Camila. 

Es sobre una mujer que se convertió de enamorarse con un sacerdote y él con ella. Después fui a casa y dos de las hijas de mi mama Tica nos visitaron. Hablé mucho con ellas. También, aprendí sobre una cosa interesante. El ratón de dientes!

Josue, el nieto de mi mama Tica, me mostró que él perdió dos dientes en frente de su boca. Que bueno! Pero después él me dijo “sí! Y el ratón de dientes va a visitarme esta noche!“

Pensé a misma ... “Qué él me dijo? No oí correcta.“

Pero, la mama me dijo que sí, en costa rica, cuando se perdió dientes, hay un ratón que visitarle para obtener el diente y dejar un poco de moneda. 

Que extraño a mí porque en los estados unidos, tenemos una hada que colecta nuestros dientes. A mí, no quiero que un RATóN viene a mi casa, se mete en mi cama, y me roba de mis dientes! Que interesante.

Hoy fue MUY bien! Mi clase fue rápido y después, fuimos a un rescate de animales.

Había muchos aves porque primer, era un refugio por tocanes. Ahora, hay muchos animales. Hay tocanes, mccaws, parrots, aves que nunca he visto. Hay un mono araña que era muy chistoso. Y faisanes en la misma caja del mono! El mono era una mujer, entonces la mono, era LOCA con los faisanes porque ella quiso toda la atención de nostros en el tour.

Pero. Mi favorita cosa de hoy, y posible mi vida, fue que pude sostener un oso perezoso bebé!! Estuve TAN feliz! Tengo un video de un perezoso pero voy a subir mañana. Tengo fotos! No quiero compartir la foto de mi porque es creepy porque este blog es público entonces, familia: está en mi facebook.

Tengo muchos fotos de los animales para ver! No puedo recordar el nombre de algunos de los animales pero cuando los vee, probablemente va a saber que son.
